The European transfer window may have just closed for English clubs, but Manchester United are already laying the foundations to make a move for Real Madrid star Raphael Varane in the winter market.
The Red Devils have made an awful start to the new season, losing two of their opening three Premier League matches – including a humiliating 6-1 home hammering at the hands of Jose Mourinho’s Tottenham Hotspur.
This defensive fragility has struck fear into the Man Utd coaching staff, and according to the Daily Star (via Mundo Deportivo), Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is ready to spend big to plug the gaps. The Norwegian boss is targeting Madrid superstar Varane, and he is hoping to bring the Frenchman to Old Trafford as soon as the transfer window reopens.
The 27-year-old’s current contract at the Santiago Bernabeu expires in the summer of 2022, meaning he will be entering the final 18 months of his deal come January. This could play into the Red Devils’ hands, and they will be in a strong position to negotiate, should the centre-back decide not to extend his spell with the Spanish champions.
Man Utd will be hoping that the allure of the Premier League and English football as a whole will attract Varane to Old Trafford, as they aim to sell him the dream of returning the famous club to the sport’s summit once again.
It will not be easy, though. The World Cup winner has not expressed any desire to leave Madrid in the future, and has admitted he is happy to remain at the club on a number of occasions. He is very relaxed when it comes to his immediate future, given that his contract still has two years left to run.
So, for the time being, Varane is still a Madrid player. And unless there is a serious breakdown over the next few months, that could well remain the case by the end of the season, too.
